Travel // 9 Best Things to Do in Shere, Surrey, A Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

Whilst I feel this little village has grown in popularity over the years, I honestly think it deserves every bit of it. Shere is one of those rare places that manages to feel timeless yet full of life, a chocolate-box Surrey village with winding lanes, old cottages, cosy pubs, and just enough quirkiness to keep things interesting. It’s one of my favourite places to go in Surrey, whether I’m in need of a slow Sunday, a good walk with the kids, or somewhere to while away the time whilst my dogs are at the groomers.

Whilst Tiong Bahru was my happy place in Singapore and Shere is my UK equivalent, iykyk.

Here are my top things to do on a day trip to Shere.

1. Start with Breakfast at The Dabbling Duck

The Dabbling Duck is a Shere must and, quite frankly, the best way to start the day. Their breakfasts are hearty, wholesome and always beautifully presented. In the winter, they light the fire in their yurt so you can still sit outside, snug and warm under the fairy lights, while tucking into eggs, pancakes or a strong coffee. It’s very family-friendly, and if you’re bringing dogs along, they’ll be just as welcome in the outdoor seating area.

2. A Scone Stop at Hilly’s Cafe

No trip to Shere is complete without a pit stop at Hilly’s. Their scones are freshly baked every day… cheese, raisin or plain, and honestly, you’ll struggle to choose because they’re all equally good. I’d suggest grabbing one to eat straight away and maybe one “for later” (you’ll thank me). If you happen to be there at the weekend, Hilly’s transforms into a tiny cocktail bar after hours, very Shere, very charming, and a fun little surprise. If you meet Hilly (the owner) consider yourself lucky, she’s a lovely, friendly lady.

3. Old-School Sweets at Shere Delights

One for the kids, or for those of us who never quite grew out of pick’n’mix. Shere Delights is an old-fashioned sweet shop that does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s perfect for grabbing a bag of penny sweets to fuel a walk. There’s something really nostalgic about it, and it makes the day feel that little bit more special.

4. Walk Through “The Holiday” Film Set

If you’re in Shere, you have to go for a walk. Our favourite loop takes you past the allotments, through the fords, and past the little bridge that featured in the film The Holiday. From there, it winds through fields where ponies graze, and into the woods beyond. It’s an easy circular walk, great for families and dogs, with enough scenery to keep everyone happy. At the end of the loop, you’ll conveniently pop out by the pub, which is the perfect excuse to stop for a well-earned pint or a hot chocolate.

5. Stop for a Pint

The William Bray is a perfect stop for a pint or a bite to eat after your walk. It’s one of those pubs that manages to feel both cosy and stylish, with a great mix of locals and visitors. The menu is surprisingly varied for a village pub, from hearty classics to lighter dishes if you’re just after a snack. The terrace at the front is a bonus on a sunny day, with plenty of space to sit back and relax, and if you’re visiting with dogs, they’ll be just as welcome as you are. Whether you fancy a quick drink or a leisurely lunch, it’s an ideal place to recharge before carrying on with your day in Shere.

6. Poke Around the Shops

Shere has a handful of small, independent shops, each with its own personality. My favourite is Split Figs, it always reminds me of my time in Asia, with its mix of homewares, textiles, and bits you didn’t know you needed until you saw them. It’s the sort of place where you can find a little treat for yourself or a thoughtful gift for a friend.

7. Lunch at Mandira’s Kitchen (and Don’t Skip the Mango Lassi)

For lunch, I love Mandira’s Kitchen, which is cosy, colourful and has a menu that never disappoints. Their mango lassi is the stuff of legend, sweet, creamy and refreshing after a morning of exploring. It’s the sort of place where you feel instantly at home, whether you’re popping in for something quick or settling in for a leisurely meal. The staff always shower my dogs with love and treats, they love going as much as we do.

8. Silent Pool Gin Distillery Tour and Tasting

A short stroll from the village takes you to the Silent Pool Gin distillery, which is well worth a visit if you like your gin. The tour is fun and informative, and the tasting at the end is the perfect way to spend an afternoon (especially if you’ve left the car at home or designated a driver!). Silent Pool is a beautiful spot in its own right, a spring-fed pool with an almost mystical feel to it.

9. Cheese and Wine at Albury Vineyard

Just across the pond from Silent Pool, you’ll find Albury Vineyard, Surrey’s first organic vineyard. It’s a gem. Book a tour if you can, or simply stop by for a tasting of their sparkling wines. Pair it with a cheese board, sit outside looking over the vines, and you’ll honestly feel like you’ve been whisked away to the French countryside, all without leaving Surrey. Can recommend a glass of their blanc de blanc.

In My Book, That’s a Perfect Day Out

So there you have it: breakfast, scones, sweets, a walk, a drink, a little shopping, lunch, gin, wine and cheese, what more could you want from a day trip? Shere has a way of balancing charm with fun, and every time I go, I leave already planning my next visit. It’s an easy day out, family-friendly, dog-friendly, and full of those little surprises that make life sweet.
